Dental implants are an alternative to bridgework and/or dentures to replace single or multiple missing teeth. The advantage of an implant is that it does not need to rest on the gum or use the adjacent teeth as anchors. Dental implants consists or a titanium screw that is placed in the bone where it is allowed to “Osseointegrate “ with the bone following which an abutment and then a crown is placed.
The only disadvantage to implants is that they are time consuming, sometimes requiring up to 9 months or more before a crown can be “loaded. ” They are also more expensive than conventional bridgework and dentures and are usually not fully covered by any insurance. Please visit our “Office Info” page to see how we can help financing your dental Implants through payment plans. Dr. Agarwal does not want financing to get in the way of your treatment.
The main criteria to have a successful implant is the condition of your jaw bone and the absence of any underlying medical condition that would delay bone healing. Prior to getting an implant, it is important for Dr. Agarwal to make a complete assessment of your dentition via a full set of X-rays, models of your mouth and often even a CT scan of your jaw. This will help Dr. Agarwal determine if you are a good candidate for implants, or if you need further treatment prior to placement that includes:
1. Bone grafts
2. Sinus lifts
3. Block bone grafts
There are some risks involved in implant placement. These are:
1. Infection at the implant site
2. Injury to surrounding tissue
3. Sinus issues especially if implants are placed in the upper molar areas
4. Paresthesia or tingling of the nerve
If you are missing a single tooth or multiple teeth; you may be considered for dental implants if you have good oral health, non-smoker and sufficient time to wait for Osseointegration to take place prior to placement of crown.
